What CSEC-Style Questions Really Test

Official CXC materials place exchange rates and salaries/wages within Consumer Arithmetic. Past-question patterns include short, direct calculations as well as multi-part questions in which one answer is needed to obtain the next. Published CSEC material includes exchange-rate tables and questions requiring conversion in both directions, while past questions have tested a basic week, overtime at time-and-a-half and finding overtime hours from a total wage.

Important: The questions on this page are original CSEC-style practice questions adapted from those patterns. They are not presented as verbatim CXC past-paper questions.

Definition: Payment calculated based on the number of hours worked.

Common Rates:

Currency Conversion

Definition: Exchanging one currency for another using an Exchange Rate.

Important: Read the exchange table carefully. In bank/cambio questions, the rate used can depend on whether the institution is buying foreign currency from you or selling foreign currency to you. Never choose a rate by guessing—use the wording of the question and the units shown in the table.

WAGES • Basic rate

Example 1: Find the basic hourly rate

A worker’s basic week is 40 hours and his basic wage is J$36,000. Calculate his basic hourly rate.

Formula: Basic rate = Basic wage ÷ Basic hours.

Basic rate = 36,000 ÷ 40 = J$900 per hour.
Exam tip: If the question gives the total pay and the number of basic hours, divide. Do not multiply.
WAGES • Time-and-a-half

Example 2: Basic wage + overtime

A worker is paid J$900 per hour for a basic week of 40 hours. Overtime is paid at time-and-a-half. He works 47 hours. Calculate his gross wage.

Basic pay = 40 × 900 = J$36,000.

Overtime hours = 47 − 40 = 7 hours.

Example 3: Time-and-a-half and double time

A worker has a basic rate of J$800 per hour. His basic week is 40 hours. He works 6 hours overtime at time-and-a-half and another 3 hours at double time. Find his gross wage.

Example 4: Find the overtime hours

A worker has a basic week of 40 hours and earns J$1,000 per hour. Overtime is paid at time-and-a-half. His gross wage for one week is J$47,500. How many overtime hours did he work?

Example 5: Gross and net salary

A clerk earns a gross annual salary of J$1,080,000. Her total annual deductions are J$144,000. Calculate her gross monthly salary and net monthly salary.

Exam tip: When deductions are given annually, subtract them from the annual salary first, then divide by 12 if the question asks for monthly take-home pay.

Example 6: Find the annual salary

A teacher receives J$72,500 per month before deductions. Calculate her gross annual salary.

Example 7: Annual salary to fortnightly salary

A technician earns J$1,248,000 per year and is paid every two weeks. Assuming 52 weeks in a year, calculate his fortnightly salary.

An exchange table gives US$1 = J$158. A visitor has US$275. How many Jamaican dollars is this worth?

Example 9: Reverse conversion

US$1 = J$158. A customer has J$31,600. How many US dollars can be purchased?

Quick check: Since you are converting a larger-looking J$ amount into a smaller number of US dollars, division makes sense here.

Example 10: Convert through a third currency

A cambio displays: US$1 = TT$6.40 and BBD$1 = TT$3.20. Calculate the BBD equivalent of US$50.

CSEC strategy: In a cross-rate problem, write the currencies at every step. Your units should cancel until only the currency requested remains.

Example 12: Choosing the correct bank rate

A bank lists US$1 as:

Best habit: Do not memorize “always multiply” or “always divide.” Write the exchange rate as a fraction with units and cancel the units you do not want.

Wages & Salaries: What Information Is Missing?

Basic rate? Look for money per hour.
Basic wage? Multiply basic rate by basic hours.
Overtime? Identify the basic week first.
Gross wage? Add basic pay and all overtime pay.
Net salary? Subtract the stated deductions.
Annual salary? Multiply monthly pay by 12.
Fortnightly pay? Use 26 fortnights in a 52-week year when stated.
Reverse problem? Work backwards using inverse operations.

Worked Example: Currency Conversion

CSEC questions often involve converting through a third currency or calculating a cost in a foreign currency.

Question: A tourist wants to buy a souvenir that costs €50 (Euros). The exchange rate is €1 = $J150.50. Calculate the cost in Jamaican Dollars.

Identify Method: We are converting FROM a foreign currency (Euro) TO a local currency (JMD). We need to Multiply.

\[ \text{Cost in JMD} = 50 \times 150.50 \]
\[ 50 \times 150 = 7500 \]

Key Examination Insights

Common Mistakes

  • Forgetting to separate Basic Hours from Overtime Hours. (e.g., working 45 hours means 40 @ rate, 5 @ 1.5x rate).
  • Confusing the Buying Rate and Selling Rate. The Bank always buys Low and Sells High to make a profit.
  • Using the wrong operation (multiplying when you should divide, or vice versa).

Success Strategies

  • Table Method: Draw a small table for wages: Hours | Rate | Pay. Fill in the blanks row by row.
  • Unitary Method: For currency, always find “1 unit equals X” first. E.g., €1 = $J150.
  • Check Reasonableness: If JMD is weaker than USD, $100 USD should become a LARGER number in JMD (e.g., $15,000). If the number gets smaller, you used the wrong operation.

Answer: 38 × 750 = J$28,500.
3 marks 2. A worker has a basic week of 40 hours and a basic rate of J$900 per hour. Overtime is paid at time-and-a-half. He works 46 hours. Calculate his gross wage.
Answer: Basic = 40 × 900 = J$36,000. OT = 6 × 1.5 × 900 = J$8,100. Gross = J$44,100.
3 marks 3. A worker’s basic week is 40 hours. Her basic wage is J$32,000 and she earns J$1,600 for each overtime hour. Her gross wage is J$38,400. How many overtime hours did she work?
Answer: OT pay = 38,400 − 32,000 = J$6,400. Hours = 6,400 ÷ 1,600 = 4 hours.
2 marks 4. A person earns J$84,000 per month. Calculate the gross annual salary.
Answer: 84,000 × 12 = J$1,008,000.
3 marks 5. A salary is J$960,000 per year. Annual deductions are J$120,000. Calculate the net monthly salary.
Answer: Net annual = 960,000 − 120,000 = J$840,000. Net monthly = 840,000 ÷ 12 = J$70,000.
2 marks 6. The exchange rate is US$1 = J$158. Calculate the Jamaican-dollar equivalent of US$425.
Answer: 425 × 158 = J$67,150.
2 marks 7. The exchange rate is US$1 = J$158. Calculate the amount of US dollars that can be purchased with J$47,400.
Answer: 47,400 ÷ 158 = US$300.
4 marks 8. A cambio gives US$1 = TT$6.40 and BBD$1 = TT$3.20. Calculate the BBD equivalent of US$75.
Answer: US$75 = TT$480; TT$480 ÷ 3.20 = BBD$150.
3 marks 9. A bank buys US dollars at J$156 per US$1 and sells US dollars at J$160 per US$1. A customer wants to sell US$250 to the bank. How much will the customer receive?
Answer: The bank is buying the US dollars, so use J$156. 250 × 156 = J$39,000.
4 marks 10. A tourist has J$63,200. The exchange rate is US$1 = J$158. She spends US$275. How many Jamaican dollars does she have left?
Answer: US$275 = J$43,450. Remaining = 63,200 − 43,450 = J$19,750.
4 marks 11. A worker earns J$1,200 per hour. His basic week is 40 hours. He works 5 hours at time-and-a-half and 4 hours at double time. Calculate his gross wage.
Answer: Basic = J$48,000; time-and-a-half = 5 × 1,800 = J$9,000; double time = 4 × 2,400 = J$9,600. Gross = J$66,600.
3 marks 12. A worker’s basic wage is J$27,000 for a 40-hour week. Overtime is paid at 1.5 times the basic rate. She earns J$31,050 in one week. Find the number of overtime hours worked.
Answer: Basic rate = 27,000 ÷ 40 = J$675. OT rate = 1.5 × 675 = J$1,012.50. OT pay = 31,050 − 27,000 = J$4,050. Hours = 4,050 ÷ 1,012.50 = 4 hours.

CSEC Examination Mastery Tip

Overtime threshold: Do not assume that every question uses a 40-hour basic week. Use the basic week stated in the question. If it says 38 hours, 38 is the threshold; if it says 40 hours, 40 is the threshold.

  • If total hours are within the basic week, all hours are basic hours.
  • If total hours exceed the basic week, subtract the basic week to find overtime hours.
  • If two overtime rates are given, calculate each block separately.
  • For currency, write the rate with its units before calculating.
  • For multi-part questions, keep unrounded values until the final answer unless the question tells you to round.
